There’s nothing like the holiday season to remind us of the beauty of shared stories. This year, my family and I celebrated Thanksgiving early to accommodate various travel schedules. I am one who cares more about gathering and prioritizing time as a family than on which specific date we actually memorialize the moment. So, rather than miss out on celebrating together, I suggested we just pick a different day to connect. Thankfully, my family was willing to enjoy the festivities almost two full weeks before the traditional date (even if it did “feel” a little too early).
It was here, during this treasured time with those I love most, that I once again observed the beauty of shared stories. Across the table or around the living room, through verbal conversations and even personalized music, narratives were woven in throughout the evening. My daughter and I reminisced over past holidays as we prepped yet another turkey together (our annual tradition). My brother showed us photos of his trip to North Carolina where he volunteered his time, talents, and a lot of physical labor to help those still living in disaster zones. My precious nephews told me all about the toys they brought with them and what kind of birthday party they were planning. My husband shared updates and insights on recent events and my mom and dad chatted about their upcoming travel plans to see out-of-state family. We ended our time together as we almost always do, with music. My daughter and brother both shared new songs they had written and played some seasonal classics.

None of these small moments appeared overtly remarkable. Yet, that is exactly what they were. Each story, every song, and even every toy offered, was an opportunity for increased intimacy – another joining together of hearts and a deepening of relationships. There was no agenda that evening (other than consuming as much delicious food as possible - bring on the stretchy pants!). It was simply a time to… be. TOGETHER.
As you attend your own family celebrations this season, take time to linger longer over conversations, quiet those outside distractions, set down your phones, and share some stories.
