I share in my bio that I am an avid consumer of literature. It is the ABSOLUTE truth! I love to read, always have. I enjoy just about every genre and often, even if I don’t completely love a book, I can appreciate the language, imagery, or other literary elements the author intentionally included in their work (though some of my book club friends may secretly laugh at that statement as they have personally witnessed moments when I struggled to “cherish” those amicable qualities in some of the titles we have read…)
This past Christmas (nearly a year ago now), my husband gifted me with “my favorite things” - books! He discovered Book of the Month, a subscription based membership that would allow me to receive a brand new book every month. I know - he’s really the most thoughtful guy! I actually don’t purchase very many books as we had moved multiple times in recent years and lived in homes that offered little storage space for hard copy books. This limitation led me to become a super-user on Libby and other e-book library apps. As a result, most of the books I read were loans from the library.
As much as I love my Kindle, there really is nothing like holding a physical book in your hands, turning the pages, and inhaling that oh-so-sweet, one of a kind, “book smell.” With this gift, I was thrilled by the prospect of being able to select 12 brand new books throughout the year. Well… life happens and I did not do a very good job of taking advantage of this monthly membership. Now, it is almost the end of the year and I needed to use up my credits before they expired. I logged in to the app and learned I could select up to five books for the next two months to enjoy the final perks of my membership. I chose some new titles and authors I haven’t read before and then grabbed a few favorites that I wanted to store on my treasured bookshelves (anyone else LOVE The Nightingale…).
I don’t think there has ever been a moment in my life when I “bought” that many books at the same time. My sweet husband was actually the one that found the delivered package on the front doorstep and was so excited for me that he brought it into the house and we opened it together. So fun! It was such a joyful moment that he snapped this picture and I had to share.
This is why I believe so strongly in the power of story and its ability to inspire, encourage, and connect. There really is nothing else like it in the world. So let’s keep reading friends and enjoy every moment… Just One More Chapter!
